Start with the awkward basket

Build a sample basket that resembles your real mix: a packaged item, two similar flavors, a promotion, a weighed product if you sell one and an item requiring a staff check. Scan actual packaging and confirm product, quantity, price and tax treatment against your expected result. Include a damaged label and an unknown barcode so you can see how staff recover without silently creating an incorrect sale.

List specialized payment programs, fuel operations, lottery or other services separately if they are part of your business. A general retail POS description does not establish support for them. Ask the relevant provider for direct evidence and the applicable terms. If one is essential and unverified, keep the system outside your confirmed shortlist until the question is resolved.

Check packs, units and supplier receiving

A case arriving from a supplier may contain a different unit of stock from the single item sold at the counter. Ask how the system represents that relationship and whether the barcode on a multipack identifies the correct sellable quantity. Receive one case, sell individual units and inspect the remaining balance. Include a supplier substitution or short delivery if those are common. A conversion that lives only in an employee’s memory is an operational dependency worth documenting.

Treat weighing as a complete setup

For weight- or price-encoded labels, confirm the barcode layout, product mapping, unit and decimal interpretation. For a connected scale, verify the exact instrument, connection and browser or device requirements. Test tare with the actual container, then check the printed receipt and stock movement. Protect the busy-shift workflow

Test permissions for price changes, refunds and restricted sales, and make sure staff understand the required checks. Reconcile the basket with cash and terminal totals at closing. Ask what happens during connection loss and which payment methods remain usable under the provider’s rules. Then price the actual configuration, including peripherals and specialized services. Small baskets make error recovery especially visible. Time a representative sequence informally with your own employee, including correcting a quantity and recovering from a missed scan; use it to identify awkward steps, not to publish a speed claim. Confirm which actions need a manager and whether that manager is normally available. A permission that protects the business should also have a practical approval path during the shifts when the owner is away.
